SO QUIET: THE PERFORMATIVITY OF A PUSSY
a film by Maria Cyber
SO QUIET
2018 | Athens - Oslo | 8 Min
Most of the people are born with a specific sex organ. I realized that one of the sex organs has much less representation in images, films, and videos than the other one. I realized that the most "silent" one, the one who doesn't give a big visual "performance", is so underrepresented! One day I got the idea to visually show what is the performance of the "silent" sex organ, so I made this short film that I named SO QUIET! There is a kind of "war" out there around gender issues. Let's "zoom in" and bring some more equality within our community by giving some "voice" to the quiet one, no matter what body/gender is carrying it!
DIRECTOR STATEMENT
I could not help but notice how often a male sex organ appears in films – a penis, a cock, a dick, in all its different states: soft, asleep, or, more often than not, hardening and then having impressive ejaculations. I realised how visible and big the performativity of the dick is. You never have to ask a man if he is horny or if he ‘came’. The answer is there, in front of your eyes. But the opposite goes for the pussy: everything is happening internally. What is the performativity of a pussy when penetration is absent? Can pussy’s performativity be visual?
